Reasons to Roam
Hear how Deb & Ollie and their two kids are eating healthy while on a year long road trip!
Meet Deb, mum to Halle and Finlay, wife to Ollie, runner, healthy eater and adventurer extraordinaire. Deb and her family are currently embarking on a mega-road trip around Australia after ditching the 9 to 5. Check out their motivations and see how they’re going (but warning, there might be a bit of FOMO when reading this one!)
18 months ago Ollie and I were running 2 busy businesses, renovating a house and trying to stay on top of the everyday life/work/school/sports juggle with 2 kids.
Life is short and something had to change so we decided to ditch the conventional 9 to 5, packed up our lives in New Zealand and bought a car and caravan and have been travelling around Australia ever since. We have seen some incredible places, and our days have been filled with things like snorkelling the great barrier reef, visiting historical sites and museums, swimming with turtles on the Ningaloo coast, hiking incredible gorges for sunrise and sharing cultural experiences and learning about the land. We still do traditional schooling via distance education online to keep on top of the important things, this normally consists of a few hours early in the morning and then we have the rest of the day to get out and explore. The kids are outside most of the day learning from the earth and from us, their geographical knowledge is incredible and their passion for nature and wildlife grows stronger every day.
Our days are busy, and the kids are constantly hungry! With the hotter climate in Australia it's not always easy having healthy, nutritious snacks that taste delicious on hand. We miss Nelson and the local fruit and produce so we love getting deliveries from home with yummy Nelson treats!
Among our favourites, our kids love the NaturKidz Fruit Crispz, it reminds them of home! They are perfect to chuck in the backpack when we are on the go and I feel happy knowing they are eating good, honest, snacks that fill them up! Feijoa sticks are their favourite – it brings back memories of collecting the feijoas straight from nana’s tree!
The kids also love pikelets and homemade sourdough with hummus, which has been heaps of fun to learn to make while on the road!
