‘Embrace challenges as opportunities’ - Emma Saunders’ sustainable life

Q&A with Emma Saunders of The Green Collective and Modified Pilates. Has she really eaten a scorpion?

Meet Emma.  Based in Nelson, New Zealand,  Emma is an advocate for sustainable living, combining her passion for eco-conscious products with a background as a physiotherapist and Pilates instructor. When she’s not innovating for sustainability, Emma enjoys quality time with her young family, valuing the simple joys of life. “My food philosophy revolves around nourishing my body and supporting local food systems,” Emma says. “I'm someone who is driven by a deep commitment to a healthier, more sustainable, and community-focused future."

NaturKidz sat down and ask her a few questions:

What does healthy mean to you?

It encompasses a balance of physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It's about nourishing my body with wholesome foods, maintaining a positive mindset, and cultivating meaningful connections.

What are some ways to support sustainable and local food systems in your community?

Supporting local farmers' markets, choosing locally sourced produce, eating in season, and advocating for sustainable agricultural practices are key.

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?

Other than jump out of a plane and eat a scorpion? Transitioning from a career as a physiotherapist to become an eco-entrepreneur has been my most adventurous undertaking. This leap into the unknown, driven by a desire to make a positive environmental impact, has been an incredible adventure of self-discovery and resilience.

What’s your favourite book or author?

Gosh, I do read a lot and find this incredibly hard to answer. Some books I have read at a moment when I needed the reflection or emotion, but I do love a good crime thriller too like The Pilgrim, and any by NZ Author Megan Dunn.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

“Embrace challenges as opportunities." This advice has been a guiding principle for me. Every obstacle is a chance to learn, evolve, and innovate. It's a mindset that has fuelled my work choices.

Favourite thing about your life?

I currently have a great life / work balance. My favourite aspect of life is the opportunity to move between family time, teaching Pilates and make a meaningful difference with The Green Collective. Running a sustainable business that aligns with my values and benefits the environment and community is incredibly fulfilling.
